THE STORY SO FAR…….

The Essex & Eastern Counties Boxer Club began life in 1958 as the Eastern Counties Branch of the British Boxer Club.   Peggy Haslam was the first Chairman and Larry and Judy Elsden were Secretary and Treasurer.

The branch continued throughout the sixties, meeting at Ongar, with such names as Dick Witham, Sheila Crompton, Joe Allington and David and Brian Webb, to name but a few, serving as Officers and Committee.

By the early seventies, Derek Hamersley was Chairman, a position he held for almost 30 years.   Matches were held at Laindon from that time until 1985 when we moved to our present venue, Ramsden Bellhouse Village Hall.

For a number of years during the eighties the branch did the catering for the British Boxer Club at St. Albans and Towcester and was always pleased to offer support, whether practical or financial.

At a Committee Meeting some time in 1984, the possibility of becoming a club was discussed and the inaugural meeting of the Essex & Eastern Counties Boxer Club was held in March 1985.   The founding Committee consisted of Linda Brown, Jean and Ray Godbold, Ken Groom, Ivy Hamersley, Derek Hamersley (Chairman of Committee), Ron King, Gordon Morton (Treasurer), Rene Morton, Nadia Maddocks (Secretary) and Jean and Terry O’Connor.

We were granted club status in March 1986 and our first Open Show was held in September of that year.   The late and much missed Betty White was our judge and it was a super day.

Championship status followed in 1993 and we have now held 24 Championship Shows, with our 2000 show drawing the record entry for the year of 350 dogs.

We are very proud to have won the coveted ‘Boscar’ three times for Favourite Show and to have been short listed twice as well.

The club is flourishing - Ken Groom Chairman, Nadia is still secretary and Linda Carnaby is Patron. Sadly, Jean O’Connor who was President for many years, recently passed away.  We have a super Committee, with a mix of experienced people and enthusiastic newcomers.
