ESSEX AND EASTERN COUNTIES BOXER CLUB

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE BOXER BREED COUNCIL HEALTH COMMITTEE

Juvenile Kidney Disease has been reported as a possible health problem in Boxers. So far, the reported cases are consistent with an occurrence of less than 0.1% within the UK Boxer population however we cannot be complacent and this number may simply mean that not all cases are being reported. Boxer Breed Council is therefore encouraging the whole Boxer community to get involved in identifying and reporting cases to allow us to research the condition thoroughly.

The symptoms seen are increased thirst and therefore an increase in urination. Loss of appetite, weight loss, stunted growth, lethargy and vomiting are also seen in most cases. When the kidneys are examined by ultrasound they are smaller than normal and often uneven in shape. Symptoms usually start between four months and two years.

If you know of a possible case please e/mail boxerhealth@btinternet.com and you will be sent all the details of what you need to do by return. Reasonable expenses which are incurred in providing samples will be covered by Boxer Breed Council. All reported cases will remain confidential to the Boxer Breed Council Health Committee and its scientific advisers.

Further details, including Questions and Answers, are available on the health pages of the Breed Council website www.boxerbreedcouncil.co.uk

The Essex and Eastern Counties Boxer Club was formed to cater for Boxer owners living in Essex and the surrounding areas, although we have many members from further afield.

Our aim is to promote the Boxer as a show dog and as a family pet, by holding shows, matches and other social events, and by working together with other breed clubs for the good of the Boxer.

Our Championship Show is held in March at Wood Green Animal Shelter, Godmanchester, Huntingdon and we are privileged to have the use of this super venue.   A cardiologist is usually in attendance at this show, heart testing for Aortic Stenosis.

The Open Show and Special Puppy Event is held at Bishops Hall, Brentwood.   This venue has a large enclosed lawned area, so that weather permitting, judging can take place outside.

Matches are held monthly on Sunday afternoons at Ramsden Bellhouse Village Hall.   This is situated ½ mile off the A129 between Wickford and Billericay.   They begin at 2.30pm with a training class.   The Summer BBQ usually takes place in July and is an event not to be missed.   Winners of Best in Match and Best Puppy in Match throughout the year are all invited back in December to compete in the finals for Dog and Puppy of the Year.   Junior Handling classes are also put on if requested.

We run seminars periodically and to date have held one on Conformation and Movement and also a Rules & Regulations one, both with Kennel Club accredited speakers.    We also joined forces with London & Home Counties Boxer Club and held a Breed Specific Seminar with A2 assessments.

Committee Members are on hand at all of our events if you need any help or advice.
